It’s Not Up to God but It’s Not All Up to You Either

When Moses died, the mantle of leadership passed to Joshua. God’s promise of possession of what He’s promised doesn’t ever end. But notice something in Joshua 1:2-3:

“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.”

God said the land already belonged to Joshua and the people, just as it belonged to Moses. But ownership and possession aren’t the same thing. The land was theirs by covenant, but it wouldn’t be theirs in reality until they moved they got up and stepped into it.

That’s where Joshua 1:8 comes in with God’s specific instructions:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

God didn’t say He would do it for Joshua. The responsibility was for Joshua to:

  • Meditate on God’s Word.
  • Speak God’s Word.
  • Do God’s Word.
  • And then—only then—would he prosper and succeed.

The Promised Land wasn’t automatic. It wasn’t going to fall in his lap while he waited kicking dust off his scandals. It was given to him and all the people by promise, but he had to rise up and take it.

And friend, that’s exactly where you and I are today. All of God’s promises are yes and amen but we have a responsibility when it comes to receiving them.

There comes a point when we have to admit: It’s not all up to God. He’s already given the promise. Now it’s up to me to get my act together, step out in faith and go get it.

For me, that means I can’t sit back and wait for my ship to come in—especially if I’ve never sent one out. No more waiting for the perfect “God” timing and no more excuses.

I hear God saying, “Joshua, Toni!”—Insert your name if you like— “Get up and go possess the land I’ve given you.”

Your promised land—whether it’s a breakthrough in your finances, healing in your body, restoration in your family or a new chapter in your calling—won’t be realized until you step into it. God has already said it’s yours. Now it’s on you to act.

Don’t let fear, procrastination, or the comfort of the familiar keep you from what God has already promised.

It’s time to rise up, move forward and take possession.

Because just like Joshua, you’re standing on the edge of your promised land. And every place you set your foot, God says, “I have given it to you.”
